Introducing the Upper Elementary Community Lunch Program!
Our Upper Elementary Community Lunch Program is an innovative example of Montessori practical life in action. Upper Elementary students research, plan, shop, and prepare a community meal for our elementary students and invited guests.
Community Lunch is an interdisciplinary program that is geared towards meeting the learning objectives of an upper elementary or a middle school classroom. The focus on independence and student-driven decision- making makes it a natural fit for a Montessori class, but it can be adapted to other classroom environments. The program involves researching, planning, shopping for, and preparing a meal for the entire class and some invited guests. The students who host lunch get meaningful practice in math, nutrition, non-fiction reading, writing, presentation, cooking, map reading and executive function skills. The students who eat the lunch practice social skills, learn about new foods, and strengthen their community. We're excited to help other schools start up a Community Lunch Program. A comprehensive pdf album of everything you need to know to start up this program in your own school is available for sale in our online web store as a PDF download!
