Our Story

Cambridge Montessori School (CMS) was founded and incorporated in 1963. The school’s beginnings and subsequent growth reflected the rekindled appreciation of the Montessori approach to early education and the establishment of the American Montessori Society (AMS) in 1960.

The story of CMS is a story of a vision for our children and for the future. It is Dr. Montessori’s story. It is our founding parent’s story. It is our community’s story.

CMS was founded by a dedicated group of parents, including the Paukulis, Minsky, and Lockhart families, and was first housed in various churches in Cambridge. By 1969, with hard work and commitment of parents, teachers and staff, CMS expanded its programing to have a broader reach. Since 1974, CMS’s Toddler/Primary Program has been located at 161 Garden Street, adjacent to Danehy Park. In 1997, with the purchase of 129 Sherman Street, the Lower and Upper Elementary Programs were added. A third location was added to our campus in 2008, located between the Toddler/Primary building and the Elementary building. This additional building houses our Middle School, the Art Studio, the Music Room, the Science Lab, and needed administrative offices and conference room.

Our campus, surrounded by the 50-acre Danehy Park, gives our students access and offerings of this incredible city, as well as an abundant amount of green space.

Currently enrolling 150 students from toddler through grade eight and serving families from Cambridge and many surrounding towns, CMS is a dynamic, international community, which reflects the diverse culture and rich educational resources of the region and enrolls students from over 20 different countries.

Cambridge Montessori School is a non-profit corporation governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of parents, alumni parents, community members, and the Head of School. CMS is accredited by the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the Association of Independent Schools in New England (AISNE) and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools and Montessori Schools of Massachusetts.
