Getting to Know You

November 10, 2016
Musicals have always been one of my favorite forms of entertainment. Growing up, my siblings and I used to listen to the songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein as we fell asleep and they are still the tunes that come to mind when I get the urge to hum. Lately, it's been Anna's song, "Getting to Know Youfrom The King and I that I can't get out of my head. Look it up on YouTube if you don't know the words.

As the new Director of Elementary and Middle SchoolPrograms at Cambridge Montessori, it has been my pleasure to watch the school year unfold! Fromconversations in the courtyard at drop off and pick up to potlucks in the park, this parent community has been most welcoming and as for the students...I hope it's evident how I feel about them!

With so much going on this fall, I have had the chance to get to know them at work and at play. Outward Bound, where the Middle Schoolers taught me to swallow my fear, climb (partway) up the fire tower and belay down, was certainly a highlight, as was kayaking with them on the Charles River for PhysEd (or PhysAct, as we call it here).

The Lower Elementary field trip to Mount Auburn Cemetery is another favorite of mine. On that bright October day, the first, second and third graders I was charged with eagerly shared their impressive knowledge of botany, not to mention their map reading skills, as they guided me through that beautiful arboretum!

A great way to get to know our Upper Elementary students has been to stop by when they are working on their "cultural" assignments. Hands-on projects that weave together the study of science, history and geography often spill out into the hallway where the critical thinking skills they are developing are easy to see. This fall they have been learning about human biology, including studying cells, the integumentary and skeletal systems. Recently it has been fun to watch as these fourth, fifth and sixth graders collaborate to create drawings and models of their own skeletal systems and talk with them about their work.

Over the next six weeks, you are invited to do just that! Get to know us better at one or more of the gatherings we have scheduled to familiarize you with our Elementary and Middle School programs - what sets them apart and makes them unique. Please join us!
