Learning Support Team Update
A wise educator once told me, “A child does not care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” This is the foundation of our Learning Support Team here at CMS. It has been such a pleasure getting to know the CMS family—it has become so clear what a special community of students and families we have here. If we have not been able to touch base just yet, I encourage you to stop me in the hallway or feel free to reach out at any time.
Now that the year is well underway, we have implemented learning support services across a broad array of needs. Amy, Tucker, and I have begun to work with our students one-on-one as well as within group settings. We’ve been helping our students in the areas of reading, writing, and math supports. Additionally, we have been reaching out to some of the students to provide organizational and planning support in order to bolster executive functioning needs. Executive functioning is a set of skills that is a complex repertoire of abilities that allows us to initiate and complete asks, plan, problem-solve, manage time, and process information efficiently. Therefore, some of our services include, but are not limited to, revising work plans, creating visual supports, breaking larger assignments into manageable chunks, using and updating planners, as well as help with task initiation and completion to support our students within this arena. The Learning Support Team will also be offering a webinar on executive functioning this fall in order to help our students generalize these skills in and outside of the classroom.
I would also like to let all of our families know of a new addition to services at CMS, which includes the implementation of a social skills curriculum across the entire school to further improve our program at CMS. While this is often an overlooked in most school settings, this is such an important aspect of our children’s development within the learning environment, therefore, we decided to place more of an emphasis on this area. Our goal is to have our students improve these essential skills amongst their peers, ultimately allowing them to be successful across all areas of their lives. We will be implementing this component by going into classrooms providing supports across the school, offering small groups, as well as tailoring individualized programs on an as needed basis.
As you know, our goal here at CMS is to promote the development of our students not only from an academic standpoint, but also across all aspects of their lives—academically, socially, emotionally, and adaptively. Our ability to do this hinges upon our ability to provide an array of services to meet the individual learning styles of all our students, and importantly, demonstrate the fundamental principle of the Learning Support Team: we care, and we care about all aspects of your child’s life. As such, we look forward to continuing to provide our teachers, students, and their families with unwavering support.
Happy Autumn CMS family,
