Greetings CMS Families,

I hope that you had a wonderful break!  It is amazing what a few days of sunshine and rest do for the mind, body and soul!  It is hard to believe that the end of the year is fast approaching.  We have so much planned between now and June.  Please be sure to check our CMS calendar to keep up to date.

 Thank you to the group of parents who attended the parent coffee yesterday.  We have been hosting monthly coffees for small groups of parents since the fall.  All parents will have been invited at least once throughout the year.  The parent coffees afford us time to connect in a small group setting, share the latest news, listen to parental concerns and feedback, and they introduce parents from different programs.  

It is always a treat for me, and I appreciate creating time and space for parents to connect.  There were a few topics that were raised by parents yesterday that are important for me to address.  As you are aware, we kicked off a search for two new Program Directors.  One for the Toddler and Primary Program and one for the Elementary and Middle School Program.  I am pleased to announce that we have received interest from a number of qualified candidates all across the country.  Currently we are checking references and finalizing the process for the Toddler and Primary Director and will name that person early next week.  Our search for an Elementary and Middle School Director continues.  One of the top candidates accepted a similar position at another school.  However, we have a great pool of candidates that we will invite to CMS to meet our community within the next couple of weeks.  We will keep you posted!  In addition to hiring Program Directors, we are also in the process of filling positions that will be open in the fall and will update you when the hiring process is complete.

I am pleased to announce that we will begin renovations for the third Lower Elementary classroom- the Turquoise Room- as soon as school ends in June.  The projected 6-8 week project will occur during the Passport Summer Program.  We have been assured by our architects and contractors that there will be minimal interruptions to the summer program.  However, we will need to change the entrance for campers and will not have access to the library.  Details about this project will be shared with all families registered for Passport this summer.  We are so excited about the renovations and look forward to showing off our new space when school starts in September!  Although this is a great short-term solution, we are still keeping our eyes on the prize for expansion.  There are a number of scenarios that we are currently pursuing, and once we have all of the information, we will share it with you.  Thank you for your patience.

Parents were also curious about professional development for teachers.  We do our best to keep you informed about professional development through the "Heads Corner."  Unfortunately, I think that the information we share often gets lost.  One idea that a parent suggested yesterday that I loved (there were many!) is to send a summary separately.  I will recap what has been done this year and also send a summary in June.  

Two years ago, the Board approved a significant increase in funding professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators.  Some examples of professional development opportunities have included Montessori training, report writing, literacy, social and emotional well being, workshops at the Montessori Schools of Massachusetts and the American Montessori Society conferences, "Learning and the Brain" conference, diversity, internet safety, working with boys, and school safety.  It is quite an extensive list.  All of our teachers are required to participate in a minimum of 20 hours of professional development.  We are completely invested in our faculty and staff and are grateful that we can provide such robust options.

We want to make sure that we are communicating effectively with you and will provide an overall summary of year two outcomes of the Strategic Plan. 

Each of these topics are a critical part of our strategic plan.  Our five areas of focus are program/students, faculty and staff, community, facilities, and finances.  We are pleased with the progress we have made.  Facilities continue to be one of our top priorities.
