Middle Schoolers Make Art for Good
3/8/2010
CMS Middle School students have been busy this winter with their studio art elective, Art for Good/Community Art. Many handcrafted items, such as soap, jewelry, wrapping paper and painted wooden boxes have been produced and are being sold throughout the winter. The students researched various charitable organizations and have chosen to donate their proceeds to Heifer International. They hope to raise $500 to buy a heifer which can help a family out of poverty. The students have already reached nearly half of their goal!

For the Community Art component of the class, students are partnering with the senior residents at nearby Cadbury Commons. The seniors and the students met earlier this semester to discuss what kind of art classes the seniors would enjoy; their choices were watercolors and pottery. The students will be the teachers, planning and leading the weekly activities for the small group of senior participants at Cadbury Commons. The pottery projects will be fired in the kiln at CMS.

This project is part of Cambridge Montessori's ongoing relationship with the seniors at Cadbury Commons. In the fall, Middle School students visited the residents to perform a showcase of Swing Dancing and Abbott and Costello's famous comedy sketch, Who's on First?
